1994 SC1
Default 1994 Saturn SC1 EGR valve malfunction trouble code

I noticed recently that my "check engine soon" light has been coming on intermittently. I am getting the code that means there is something wrong with the egr system. What would be the best thing to do in this situation? I've been hearing a whistling sound for a while now...I have suspected it to be a vaccum leak....would it have anything to do with this trouble code?

If you have a vacuum leak in the EGR system it will cause the SES light to come on as the system won't function properly. If I remember correctly, the Haynes book states that it could be the EGR valve, EGR solenoid, or map sensor . Check your vacuum lines since you have a whistling noise, then make sure the wires and connectors are goo/tight. If that doesnt stop the SES light you could do what I did and go to a junkyard and buy the possible bad parts, and replace them one at a time until you stop the light and then replace the junkyard part with a new one. I got the part for 15 bucks and found the EGR solenoid was my problem.

Almost left out cleaning the EGR valve before the junkyard trip.

I'm assuming you have the non-california vacuum powered EGR valve. Your year was transitional.

If so I agree with Johnt.
