Question DTC P0172 Fuel Trim System Rich Bank 1

Does such a thing exist where can I find info that defines all the possible problems and how to eliminate item by item working down the list for DTC P0172?

It'll cost you $25, but www.alldata.com probably has the most complete on-line info.

for P0172

POSSIBLE CAUSES

The following are malfunctions that could cause a rich condition:

* Fuel pressure too high. Perform fuel pressure test.
* Leaking fuel injector(s). - Perform pressure leakdown test.
* Vacuum leak around the MAP sensor grommet.
* Oxygen sensor contamination.
* Restricted exhaust or air intake.

NOTE: If the front oxygen reading voltage is above 600 mv and the rear HO2S is above 600 mv all the time, the O2 sensors are probably not at fault.

...
There is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action.

Yes. Saturn Service Manuals have this information in them. each code is listed along with a diagnostic chart with steps to follow to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the info, I also have excessive blow-by coming out of the valve cover when the PVC is taken out, idles rough too. The Saturn folks think it does not need rings (previuos advice from local mechs) but I should but Mobil 1 and see if that cleans it up. The SC2 sat for 6 months while I was in the Middle East, my wife drove it around the block once a week.

Any advice?

Would appreciate any guidance, tried Mobil 1, still same problem. Do I need to change the rings?

The rough idle would be from the excessive blow by from the PCV system into your intake. You may have to drive it for some time for Mobil1 to have a chance to clean it all up - about 1000 miles total. Try to make all your trips as long as possible each time you drive - 20-30 miles minimum would be good.

You changed the filter when you changed the oil? Make sure you are going with a high quality oil filter - at least as good as possible with full-flow types. Look for posts in this category and the S-Saturn category for oil filters and see what works and what doesn't.

If you are successful at stopping it, change the oil and the filter again at that time. Even if it is before 3000 miles.

If after all this it still hasn't cured the problem, you should consider a crankcase flush or a top end clean out or both. Lots of posts that cover this too...

Good luck to you.
