Question LS2 Water Pump and the timing belt

My neighbor has a 2000 LS2 (V6), around 58,000 miles. He recently had it in to the local retailer for an oil change where the tech reported a problem with the water pump. It's reportedly going bad and needs to be replaced - he was told that if the water pump goes bad, it's connected to the timing belt and can cause engine destruction if it seizes.

I thought the accessory belt on the V6 was separate from the timing belt. Is there *really* some connection there? There's no indication of problem with the water pump - no noise, no coolant loss, etc. It's a pretty expensive repair (and apparently requires special tools.) I recommended waiting until there's a real indication of a problem before spending the money.

Is there any truth to the story that water pump failure can eat the engine? Is there a problem with the L-Series water pump, and if so what's the symptoms to be looking for?

Thanks.

Default Re: LS2 Water Pump and the timing belt

The V-6 water pump is not in contact with the timing belt in any way. If it is leaking the coolant can get onto the timing belt which is not good for the belt.
The labour time to replace the pump is aound three hours (approx) flat rate. No real special tools involved other than an engine support as the front engine mount needs to come off and it is not reccommended to support the engine on the aluminum oil pan. You do need a selection of torx bits and sockets.

Thanks. I'll pass the info on.
