2008 VUE 3.6L
Default 2008 Vue doesn't start after filling with gas

My future daughter-in-law has a 2008 Saturn Vue and she's had on a couple occasions that it won't start after filling it with gas. It just cranks over but the engine doesn't start. She waits a few minutes and tries it again and then it works OK. I haven't checked for any engine codes but no indicator lights shows up either.

Any thoughts, suggestion or ideas I can pursue to further resolve this?

THANKS MUCH!!

RWacker - problem sounds familiar but I didn't find in service bulletins.

We might be able to put finer point on search if you provide engine (2.4, 3.5, 3.6).

Just a thought - does future DIL try to cram fuel into tank (top-off)? This is a no-no. Should gas get into the EVAP system it will take a while to clear the system.

Not to preach - but EVAP system draws fumes from tank into engine for burn (through carbon crystals). Stands to reason if you put too much gas into tank it "might" infiltrate into engine through EVAP plumbing to cause flooding condition.

Remind her gently - alway pull fill nozzle as soon as auto-shutoff occurs.

I located and attached a service bulletin related to no/hard start after fueling. Problem is - the bulletin appears to be specific to 2004 Vue with 3.5 engine.

According to SB diagnostic trouble code P0496 may or may not be present.

Anyhow, as far as I know, all vehicles have EVAP purge valve - if this little guy is flaky - topping off the tank might not be the issue with the occasional starting issue. Typical EVAP flow diagram is attached.

Let me know if you're interested in locating the valve (need engine size).

2008 VUE 3.6L
Default Re: 2008 Vue doesn't start after filling with gas

To Mr. "far2grumpy",
sorry for the delay in responding. My daughter-in-law's Vue has the 3.6L engine.
Also, I just recently took it to O'Reilly's and borrowed their scan tool and it posted 3 errors. P0171, P0174 and P0496. I reset the codes and will see if any re-appear.

If any other thoughts come to mind, please feel free to share them.

Thanks MUCH for your help!

Same problem with my 08 Redline. I am stationed in Germany and there is one authorized GM repair shop. It took them 3 months to replace the transmission that failed at 85,000 miles, but that is another thread.

I had them check out the engine light, and they just reset the light and told me it was because I didn't put the gas cap back on correctly. Drove home and within 10 miles the engine light came back on. Pretty much narrowed it down to the solenoid purge valve thanks to the wonderful internet, so ordered one from ACDELCO and now I need to install it and test my hypothesis. I would greatly appreciate any help in locating the valve. Intend on taking it to the auto skills shop and throwing it on a lift.
The engine is the 3.6L, '08 Redline AWD

Thanks
Justin

Happy Re: 2008 Vue doesn't start after filling with gas

Had no problem locating the valve, had the new one switched out in about 10 minutes. Engine light went off immediately, runs noticeably smoother. All for 22 bucks.
