![]() The p1406 is a pintle position error when checked against the learned value.
Clean the socket and plug carefully with CRC QD-Electronic Connector cleaner and then carefully inspect the plug to verify each individual connector is at the same depth. Then reset the code and see what happens. Clean the EGR valve itself carefully. With a warmed up engine, remove EGR and the n restart engine to purge carbon from system. Engine will rev to 4000 RPM. Shut it off and replace valve. Install one of these gaskets. http://www.sherco-auto.com/klean.htm You can usually find these at your local parts store. This will help keep the crud out of the valve. Need more info on the slam. What gear, cold/hot, light acceleration or hard acceleration, A/C on/off.

![]() how are you doing oldnuc ? i was going to pm you but you were not logged in .the slam happens every time i drive the car past 42 miles/hour . i tried to do a count and i think it happens while shifting to the four gear . about the egr valve , i had removed it , cleaned it really well with carburator cleaner before i re-installed it . but i re-used the old gasket . so i'm going to replace the gasket with a new one and clean the socket and plug with the crc qd- electronic cleaner like you suggested . thanks oldnuc !

![]() @campus189 I'm new to the forum and have been watching your youtube videos, which have been a great resource. Thank you.
My '96 Saturn SL1 has been running okay up until a year ago, when the SES light came on and the transmission was running real ragged. I received the p0733 code after noticing my transmission had been giving symptons like slipping and rough gear changes. Reverse works, but I do have to wait a moment on hitting the gas after shifting, to allow it to "catch up", or else the high engine rpms give me the oh-so-common slam/jolt. When accelerating or under load, I will intermittently get the slipping, which will re-engage if I release the accelerator and let the system catch again. During deceleration, it doesn't seem to want to release right away, so while I'm braking, it feels as if the throttle is still being applied for a little while longer. In short, everything seems to have a delayed reaction to shifting, other than the slipping. I also notice the occasional knock/click when shifting between parking/forward/reverse, and when the gas is applied/released, but I suspect the engine mount might be to blame, as the rubber is deteriorating, and I noticed the motor/tranny twist when I shift in to gear, from Park. So far, I changed the ATF fluid/filter which smoothed shifting a little, and I did the solenoid multi-meter test (at the wiring connector only), which all passed, testing at 5.5 to 5.7. After researching the various threads, I believe the possible issues have been narrowed down to loose input/output shaft nuts or a faulty valve body. Before I take the plunge and open up the VB or transmission, is it possible that the issue still lie with the solenoids? They passed the resistance test at the connector, but could they likely fail at the actual solenoid contacts; or could they pass this test, but fail mechanically? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably not the Input Shaft Nut - that usually causes a harsh 2nd Gear Shift and a P0732 code. This thread fixed a P0733 with a Valve Body . . . http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=178912 It could just be a bad 3rd Gear Solenoid (like you said, it could be good resistance-wise, but bad mechanically) - you could save some dough by just replacing that.
