Default 2002 Vue front end grinding noise (tires) ?

Hello all, after much searching i decided to sign up and post here in hopes someone else will see this and can tell me what to check.

First i should say i am not a real mechanic type so bare with me. Computers i know in and out, engines, not so much.

Anyways, to the problem.

I have a 5 speed manual 2002 Vue

About 6 months ago my abs light came on and the traction control button stop working. Not a huge deal in my opinion but i know i should get them fixed. The real problem started about 6 weeks ago and sounds like it's getting worse. The sound is coming from the right front end or both, i can't tell for sure but it is the front. It sounds like the tires are actually rubbing against something as i drive. I know it's not the engine because i shut the car off while coasting down a hill to make sure. It's not the clutch because pushed in or let out the sound is there. it starts at as little as 1 or 2 mph and gets louder and increases in tone as i speed up and lowers in tone as i slow down.

last weekend i had the tires rotated to see if it was just loud tires that were wareing wrong or something. Nope, now they sound louder. The guy said my pads look fine (i had him check)

The sound does not increase while turning at all and it's not the steering wheel.

So i am wondering if the ABS thing is related to this new issue or could it be berrings? Would they make that type of noise and lastly, other than sounding bad, is this something that is risky to keep driving.

Thanks and i am open to all ideas. I have a trusted mechanic and am close to having him take a look but i thought i would start here.

Thanks to all.

You've probably got a dead wheel bearing, or potentially a center carrier bearing (almost centered on the front of the VUE - supports the longer half of the driveshaft). Dead bearings are common on the VUE - search for it on here.

If it is grinding as low as 1 or 2 mph, I would not drive it anywhere but to your mechanic or a dealer... it sounds like it is pretty bad.

Agreed with the others. Bad bearings or CV joint.

Costs for replacing the CVjoint/bearing/axle assembly is around $200 for parts. Labor can be another $200.

Have you mechanic put it up on the lift and find the source of the noise. It should be evident on a lift. Not much you can do with it sitting on all four wheels...

BTW, I replaced both my front CV/bearing/axles assemblies: one at 65K miles, the other at 78K miles. One made a harsh grinding noise. The other had a very loud clicking noise.

Wheel bearing! $375, and you have three more lurking.
