Default Rough Shifting

My 2002 SL2 has developed a shifting problem when attempting to accelerate for passing. The dealer says the exhaust back pressure is too high at over 4PSI. They disconnected the cat but the pressure was still too high. They recommend replacing the exhaust manifold for $900. There is still no guarantee this fixes the acceleration problem. Do you think there is a link between the two problems? If the manifold has a blockage, what is the cause? Is it very difficult to remove the manifold and try to clean or replace it myself?

This is not a "General Saturn" question; you'll get more responses posting in either "S-Series General" or "S-Series Tech".

They probably want you to replace the exhaust manifold because it has another catalytic converter built into it, and that's the probably the one that's clogged. It can't be cleaned; if it's clogged, it's toast. You might be able to DIY this, but the part (at saturnparts.net, anyway) is almost $500. Some aftermarket price shopping might be in order.
