Default upper motor mount

holy crap, about 2 weeks ago i changed the plugs in my 99sl2m, looked every thing over, all seemed good.

the other day when i started my car it started vibrating really bad. as it wamed up it seemed to stop vibrating.

today i left work early to check things out and found that the motor mount looked kinda strange, looked at my daughters, and wow what a differance.

this is the one i changed, got a new one from the local parts store for 25.00. it is the frowny style but for the price and life time warrenty, im not going to complain

That's the way my mount looked on my SL2 when I got it.. destroyed.

I found a really nice mount (good style) on a first gen SC1 at my local yard. Gonna go back and get that one!

Be aware that frown style mounts have a track record of not lasting long, that is why Saturn abandon that design. Mine lasted about 2 years. There are a number of other posters with similar experience.

When the replacement failed it also snapped two of the three studs that hold it to the timing chain cover. I was lucky, it was fairly easy for me to to replace the studs, and no other damage happened. But I wasted a lot of time getting studs form a dealer, getting a replacement mount and so on. (Ultimately I mail ordered an OEM from getsaturnparts, easier than finding the receipt and going to the closest AdvanceAuto parts store.)

My take is the "lifetime" warranty is worth what? - the price of the frown mount - $25. The time and effort to replace a premature mount failure, even on a DIY basis is worth a lot more to me. Unless of course you are getting rid of the car in the near future.

You pays your money and takes your choices. YMMV.

Be aware that after changing that upper mount, the lower mount should be adjusted by loosening it, then re-tightening it. See previous threads for torques, etc.

I ordered the polyurethane top mount from SDA last year, didn't bother with any of the other mounts at the time. Well, had to remove 'em to get the engine and autotragic out but that was before the new mount went on. Doesn't feel like it's got much more vibration then my mom's '97 with a dealer mount.

Still waiting for SDA to come back so I can get the good dog bones, evil bums are keeping me waiting

The proper way to fix a S-Series automatic is to replace it with a 5spd O:)
