Default Hand Brake Release Repair

I searched the forum for this problem and didn't find it. My parking brake release button had discharged from the handle (see pic). Anybody have a fix for this before I dig into it or search for a used JY part?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks. That's an S-series. The L-series doesn't work like that.

I took the hand brake assembly out. A plastic piece broke. Imagine that. I'll have to drill out some rivots to get to the mechanicals and see what I can fabricate. The plastic fatigues with age so a junkyard part would likely do the same.

2003 L-Series 3.0L Sedan
Default Re: Hand Brake Release Repair

The Saturn L series is based on the Opel Vectra B model produced in Europe. In the UK it was sold as the Vauxhall Vectra. Whilst sales in the US were small of the L series, the Vectra was the staple of the business fleet, so as a consequence there is a flourishing aftermarket parts supply not seen in the US for the L series. The L series also has a cousin in the Saab 9-5 which also was based on the Vectra B.

i just did a quick google for handbrake parts for Vectra B and click on the link to see what you can get. There are compete handbrake assembly for just dollars (you need to do the exchange rate as they are quoted in Euros I have purchased new handbrake cables and other suspension bushings for my lads 2003 L300 from Europe without problems.

Hope this helps. In any search make sure you use the designation Vectra B, emphasis on the B.

hi floridas- good pickup on the different construction of the brake in the L100 than on the s model. surmise the brake button ejecting itself from the s model brake is more common than on the L. actually in my discussions with other L owners and there aren't too many left this brake problem hasn't come up. maybe they improved the design on the L. it gets plenty of use in mine since for safety in parking I always put the trans in 1st and pull up the brake. using the park brake regularly reduces the incidence of the cable rusting and sticking. had that happen a few times with fords and dodges back in the day when I would secure the parking by putting the trans in first only. didn't help living in nj either which is the rust capital of the world. thanks tons bob f

I would bet a used parking brake assy from an automatic car would give many years of service. The parking brake is seldom used on flat ground in an automatic car.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I will be more cautious in the future.

The factory service manual does not discuss repairing a parking brake handle. It gives replacement instructions of the assembly and that is all.

I'm doing it. I took my L-series apart this evening. A plastic piece broke side. I'll fix it with some JB Weld and post some pictures later. If that doesn't work, all either fabricate something from metal or I'll order a replacement from the UK as suggested above.

The JB Weld did not adhere to the plastic used in this application. I had to fabricate. I used a bicycle chain master link. It's reinstalled in the vehicle and works great. Total cost of repair was about $5.

Pics are here. Hope it helps the next guy.

P.S.: Couldn't load pics to Saturnfans. The file sizes are far too limiting.
