Default Gear 3 Ratio Incorrect?

What the heck does that mean?! I have a 2001 Saturn SL1, only 54k miles, and my "Service Engine Soon" light came on tonight. It's an automatic, I noticed it wasn't shifting properly and was jerking. I took it to AutoZone and "Gear 3 Ratio Incorrect" is what came up. I had just taken a trip to Michigan yesterday, and it was fine. I have to go to Michigan again on Monday and need it to be fixed by then. I was told that they have to take the whole transmission out. About how much will this whole procedure cost? Thanks for the help!

By any chance do you remember the "actual Code?"

Is it one of those tranny sensors??

I'm not sure. He didn't give me the code, just told me what was wrong with it.

He didn't give me a code. I'm taking it in tomorrow. As long as it's under 600 I'm fine.

I would borrow someone elses car, or rent one, for this MI trip. Hard to diagnose and fix something now and have complete confidence by monday.

Simple stuff you can check is fluid level and alternator output... listen to AM radio with the rear defogger and lights on... for a whine that varies with engine speed. See if ~14 volts is present with the car running.

This is a serious issue, as 3rd gear is slipping or not engaging properly... could be a solenoid in the valve body or the valve body itself... not as bad as a whole transmission but not trivial either. May be worth a pro diagnostics and not one by a guy who's first words out of his mouth are "you need a new transmission".

If you go to the how-to section of this site, search for OBD-II trouble codes by user wolfman. Get the POxxx code (backwards-- use the 3rd gear ratio malfunction for inspiration), remember that, then search this site and google with that code number for some probable causes.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
