sososo glad you guys told me to check the cable.
Put the neg batt cable on again today (i left it off overnite). Rechecked the pos cable - no wiggle, but I got 2 more turns with my 1/4"wratchet. Then a rough start (why?). Then died.
Then started. And again!.......
Ignore the starter wiring. Those wires are fine and you're distracted by doubts about starter wiring. Your problem is main power and wiring - battery or battery cables.

Is your battery a top or side terminal battery? Side terminals are easily damaged from over tightening and can strip out the few threads on soft leaded posts.

I do have a side terminal battery.

yes, I realize the fact my new starter works verifies the purple wire. I wanted to familiarize myself with the process for future needs.
Because I am just guessing another no start is in my future, and of course the starter will need replacement sometime. Plus, I have another vehicle that will be needing a starter.

I tried to daisy-chain some of the harbor freight dvm wires together and tested on a spare computer battery I have. Not surprisingly, 2 HF meters do not agree with each other on the value, though. IF there was an issue with the purple wire, could I take any value except 0 as a good sign?

It is a good sign as long as it is 12-ish.

If you measure the small purple wire for voltage, you'll see battery voltage only when the ignition switch is turned to the START position. A simple alligator clip/red probe onto this terminal and the negative probe of the meter is connected to any part of the engine block or chassis. Turning on ignition won't show 12 volts. Only when the ignition switch is turned to START position will you see battery voltage and you'll hear the starter running. When you see 12 volts at START, the starting circuit is fine. When you hear the starter run and turn over the engine, the starter is fine.

Is everything all right now?

Melissa,
Glad you were able to persevere and follow through to find the solution to your no-start.
Just think of all you have experienced AND learned in the last few days.
-Push starting a stick transmission.
-Using a DMV
- How to safely get under then remove and install a starter while on ramps.
-To learn 'how tight is tight" when working with battery connections (keep them as tight as possible, especially with cold weather coming soon....they tend to contract somewhat and can loosen up a bit.)
AND
-That you can trust many Saturnfans members to reach out to you and provide tips on what to check for and to ask you many, many questions (even at all hours of the day or night).

Congrats!

thanks for indulging me.
I've started the car several times, so that part is good, anyway.

Still not confident my connections at the starter terminals will last the test of time. I know I used the socket to tighten the nuts but might not have had a wrench on it. Too much torque and I risk damaging it.
Same with the battery cables, but at least those are easier to get to.

toggenburg, you are so right, I was thinking the same thing. I just wish it wasn't all so difficult for me.
