Sad Remote Keyless Entry

I am not a car person by any strech but I decided to try with this one, my new to me 98 SL2. I went on ebay and got a new key fob because the one I was given didn't work and it looked as if a rabid animal had it last. I made sure the numbers on the back mtched and got directions with it on how to program it. I got on here and discovered the paperclip trick.
Today I went out and tried it. I place the clip ends in the 4 and 8 slot and instead of door locks moving I hear a horn chirp. I tried to hold the key fob lock buttons down anyway but it simply isn't working.
Any ideas on what is happening?
Thanks!

I'll bet if you try the power lock buttons on the doors they don't work. Check the LOCKS fuse in the interior fuse box. The clue is that the locks didn't cycle when you inserted the paper clip.

Oh, did you have the KEY in the ignition lock when you tried this?

I can't remember if the keys were in so I will have to try again with that but, my door lock buttons work. I bought this used so I hit all the buttons and such to be sure they all worked. I wasn't concerned with the RKE working because I knew you could buy and program them with little issue. Ill try again with the keys in but I think I had them in...If it doesn't work I'll be back...Thanx!

Okay, I went ahead and programmed the key fob. I had to put the key in the ACC position and it worked great until the next morning. The next morning my alarm went off and killed my engine when I had to get into my car the via using the key because my fob wouldn't work. I had just placed a new battery in so I know that didn't cause it. Any ideas what could be wrong. I have not tried to reprogram because I am still upset at my car and the stupid alarm system.

Perhaps a little OT for this thread but here goes. On my 99 SC2, everything regarding the keyless entry seems to work EXCEPT the horn does not chirp under any circumstances nor does it sound when in panic mode even though the dome light does flash. Is there perhaps a relay somewhere that controls the horn from the RKE?

Thanks...

Tom

Dang, you shoulda waited two days; then you'd win the two-year necroposting award!

KIDDING. Coupla possibilities:

It may have been programmed not to chirp the horn. That's one of the programming options. Visit our How-To Library, and search from there for "RKE paper clip"; that thread has the dirty details on the various options (something about cycling the key X number of times, with the front bumper facing Spring Hill, or what-not).

It may be that your horn itself is "tired", and doesn't respond to such a short burst of current. Try this -- press one of the horn buttons on the steering wheel as briefly as possible. Does it get the horn to chirp? Or do you have to hold the button down for a half-second or so? If the latter, the problem is in the horn, no longer strong enough to respond to a momentary activation.

It's not, by any chance, one of those aftermarket electro-compressor "blaster" horns, is it?

I did read Wolfman's how-to and there doesn't seem to be a no-horn option other than just plain lock-unlock with no security which obviously isn't my situation. But I am leaning toward the weak horn option and will check that out tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick response...

Regards,
Tom
