Default Timing Belt Replacement

My 03 Vue is in for repair to the Oil Cooler and the dealer suggested I get ready to replace the Timing Belt at 100,000 miles. I am now at 84,700! Dealer says they charge a flat rate of $995.00. Is this a fair price?

I thought the 03 V6 VUEs had a timing chain.

It's a belt. You don't need to do it right now as there is nothing in common with the oil cooler fix. It won't cost you more to do it later unless they're willing to offer you some special deal, and $995.00 is at the high end of this job. You can probably get the belt, pulleys, and water pump replaced for a lot less at other dealers or independent shops. It's nothing that requires special "Saturn" expertise. Pretty straight forward job.

And the belt doesn't break at 100k miles. That just a suggested replacement interval. It may go 150k or more before it breaks. Though if you let it go to failure, it will wipe out the valves, which will be very expensive.

So the L81 motor is an "interference" style?

With the move toward higher compression ratios, I think it's darn near impossible to build a non-interference DOHC engine these days.

The dealer called today to inform me my Vue would be ready until tomorrow, unless I wanted to go ahead with the timing belt, then it would be Monday. I questioned the $995.00 charge and they said the 03 doesn't require new tensioner's (lifetime), so the actual cost is $650, plus another $70.00 for the water pump. I am going to wait on this, we don't drive the Vue much!

ps. the dealer is Saturn of Indianapolis at Pike Plaza.

The engine in my 2003 Mazda Protege is non-interference.

Quick follow up to this post and the Oil Cooler Leak, Saturn of Indianapolis has had my 03 Vue since Thursday morning and they're saying they may not get it done today, (Saturday) because they're really slammed over there. Is this a 3+ day job, or is this dealer just that bad? This is my first interaction with a Saturn dealer, just purchased the Vue a few months ago. So far, not impressed!

The only thing I would check is that the timing belt did not become contaminated with coolant. If the timing belt is contaminated, its days are numbered.
