Rough shifting (AT) SL1 2001

Got a problem with rough shifting (AT), especially when I put it in reverse. When I put it in reverse it sounds and feels like I backed into something.

Had an oil change about 2.5 months ago and...

Re: Trying to replace brake shoes on 2001 SL1

Found the problem with the low pedal. It's my work with the wheel cylinder. She's got a slow drip and when you press on the pedal it will only hold for a few seconds before going to the floor. So...

Re: Trying to replace brake shoes on 2001 SL1

Just so I'm clear on the proper adjustment for the shoes.

You only open them enough to get a little drag when you spin the drum, correct?

Also, I was noticing that the cap to my resevior...

Re: Trying to replace brake shoes on 2001 SL1

Okay, shoes are on. No problem. Had to file the hole for the brass pin a bit, but it's in. My problem now is that I have no pedal!

Here's what I did. Replaced the shoes exactly as the video...

Re: Trying to replace brake shoes on 2001 SL1

Hey, I got down to taking off the C-clip. No problem. However, when I went to install the new shoe on that side there's a brass pin that goes through the shoe that the C-clip attached to. I have...

Trying to replace brake shoes on 2001 SL1

Brake pads were a breeze. Went to change the shoes, which have never been changed, and ran into a problem. I can't seem to get the drum off. Any tips on how to do this would be appreciated. Plus...

Re: Just replaced the valve cover gasket in my 2001 SL1

That's an awesome idea. I'm going to have to try that next time.

Anyway, here's an update. Evidently I did it correctly as the car is running a heck of a lot better and the rough idle is gone,...

Re: Just replaced the valve cover gasket in my 2001 SL1

It says that it sets up in 15 minutes, skins in 1 hour and cures in 24 hours. However, it doesn't say not to drive the vehicle or when to drive it. I honestly don't have a problem with waiting the...

Just replaced the valve cover gasket in my 2001 SL1

No I didn't over tighten the bolts. I brought them snug and turned them back half a notch.

Anyway I was wondering how long I have to wait after applying the RTV to test the seal and drive the...

Mass airflow sensor location?

I'm trying to locate the MAF on my 2001 SL1, but I don't see anything that looks remotely like the picture of the MAF they have at Autozone. I know it's got to be somewhere between the air filter...

Re: Need an opinion on brakes for 2001 SL1

Would worn out brakes cause a "low pedal", because after the front brakes were changed last time it seemed like I had to really push on the brake pedal to get the car to stop. My freinds dad did my...

Need an opinion on brakes for 2001 SL1

I'm new at this and I'll be checking out the "How To Library", but I need some advice on brakes aside from how to do them.

Now the front pads have been changed a couple of times, but the rear...

Re: Is there a wrong way to install a thermostat?

Alrighty then! The fan kicked on a little bit past the 1/2 way mark. I must admit that I've been really skiddish about the car as it's the only means of transport that my family and I have at this...

Re: Is there a wrong way to install a thermostat?

Okay, I replaced the ECTS and now my temp gauge is registering where it should be. (i.e. about a quarter to half the way up the gauge) Now I'm not sure about the fan kicking on during idle w/o A/C. ...

Re: Is there a wrong way to install a thermostat?

I checked to make sure the fan was running while in idle and it was running, no doubt about it. Could it be that it's not performing at peak or is it one of those things where it works or doesn't...

Is there a wrong way to install a thermostat?

I have a 2001 SL1 and I've had the radiator replaced in Feb 08, but I still got steam when I was at an idle. A friend of mine said to replace the thermostat. (Easier said than done, but I got...
