Re: Replacing valve cover gaskets myself?

If you shear those manifold bolts, the replacement size is:

M6-1.0

An E2 easy-out bit paired with a 7/64 drill bit with get any sheared bolts out of the manifold.

FWIW :)

Re: Left CV Half-Shaft Replacement Question

Cutting was taking forever, so, I carefully shimmied the shaft out of the transmission with a crowbar.

I picked up a Cardone replacement, as folks recommended them over Empi (the other readily...

Re: code P0420

... forgot to mention, I talked to a (previous) Saturn mechanic about it, and he mentioned that from what he'd witnessed, premature cat failure in the Vue often came from long-term coolant...

Re: code P0420

This exact situation wound up being a bad pre-cat for me.

Unfortunately, the reason the pre-cat was bad is that the previous owner had taken a long-handled screw driver to it....

Re: 06 Vue Wheel Bearing Hub Replacement

If you are seized to the spindle and not the knuckle, try pulling the hub out a little (stretching the half shaft about 1/2 inch), and put some kind of shim between it and the knuckle. Re-install...

Re: 06 Vue Wheel Bearing Hub Replacement

Ha, I'm in the middle of the same thing myself.

Front or Back?

Are you seized on the spindle of the axle, or to the knuckle?

Rears are a piece of cake with a 3-jaw puller (free loan from...

Re: PCV on 2003 V6

Seeing as it is winter, and you are leaking oil, have you looked at TSB 04-06-01-001?

You probably have already covered this, but it concerns the rerouting of the PCV hose to prevent water...

Left CV Half-Shaft Replacement Question

I'm halfway done cutting my left CV axle off as a byproduct of wheel bearing replacement on that wheel.

Has anyone replaced this axle before? Is it the same as any front wheel drive CV axle...

Re: Axle Socket Size

Didn't notice any slop with the 30, but I'll be sure to use 29mm next time. Thanks for the headsup, Chaz.

Re: Axle Socket Size

Rear nut is 30mm. Just did mine yesterday.

Don't forget to break torque with the tire on the ground if you don't have an impact wrench.

Re: Rear Hub Bearing Replacement DIY

Also don't forget the last two vital steps:

1. Get your wife in the car after the followup test drive so she has to acknowledge the value you bring to the relationship.

2. Go relax in the...

Re: Rear Hub Bearing Replacement DIY

I just finished the right rear bearing on my Vue using your excellent writeup, and can address a few gaps that others might experience (as I did).

1. In the absence of a impact wrench, the axle...

Re: Problems after plugs and Tstat change (03 V6)

I did something like that after doing head gaskets on a Dakota one time. Spent nearly two days trying to figure out why it wouldn't get any spark at all-- tested nearly everything from the battery...

Re: Post Center Support Bearing Noise - Quick response please, if possible

Road test came back fine. I've got a rumble in the rear end that's gotta be a wheel bearing(s) or perhaps the RDM. Either way, vibration is gone, and it sounds a little quieter than before.

Re: Post Center Support Bearing Noise - Quick response please, if possible

Unbolted the rear of the rear driveshaft from the rear diff, and repositioned it to where I *think* I'd painted an alignment mark (paint wore off over the week, of course).

I made sure to torque...

Post Center Support Bearing Noise - Quick response please, if possible

Hey guys.

2002 Vue V6 AWD

Just replaced both U-joints and the center support bearing on my wife's Vue.

I marked the shaft to ensure harmonic balance wasn't goofed up when the U-joints were...

Re: drive shaft removal

You mentioned you're waiting on money... It looks like RockAuto has the part for about $27 with shipping (assuming it's the "output shaft bearing" or "input shaft bearing" you're talking about).

Re: drive shaft removal

Removal of the drive shaft is used as diagnostic in identifying whether or not vibration felt between certain RPM is due to a failed component in the drivetrain or elsewhere.

Bearing that in mind,...

Re: P0421 Code

Both the pre-cat and cat were empty. Mechanic said they "fell apart". I'm thinking previous owners and a long screwdriver might have been involved.

Either way, that perfectly explains the code I...

Re: P0421 Code

P0421 came back on the test drive.

I went ahead and took the car to a local mechanic who swapped out the rear (bank 1) pre-cat for a used one, and passed the emissions portion of my safety...

Re: Front brake change... tools needed?

Like I said, I had to modify the brake hardware kit to get it to fit in the caliper. Man, it was close to fitting normally, but there is a tab on each one that I wound up having to cut off. I...

Alright, got it all pieced back together, so here's my findings:

Removing the hood before beginning makes this job infinitely easier.

Nearly all of the bolts sizes are 10mm.

Torque on the...

Well, I didn't notice it until I've got everything put back together, but the emissions sticker under my hood seems to be calling for a .053 gap.

Every other piece of documentation I've seen...

Re: Front brake change... tools needed?

That's just for pads, by the way. I haven't done rotors yet, but one of the other folks on here can probably punt you that information.
